Our dream home, the building experience.
The holidays came and went and in February we moved forward with signing off on the plans with Craig. This was a meeting to go over the plans in great detail to see if there were any changes that needed to be made. This was probably the 3rd or 4th time meeting with Craig and Jeff to refine our house plans inside and out. We had made a few changes in between like literally flipping the house to have the driveway on the north side of the house to adding footage to certain areas and build out walls to flipping the house back with the drive on the south end. TAKE YOUR TIME as you go through this process and refer back to any notes you had for yourself that you didn’t want to forget to incorporate in your home design. This is the time to do it. This is YOUR dream home. After you sign off on the plans, the house is what it is. You may be able to change a few things later but that could/will be at your expense.
During this time we were still struggling with getting a building loan. To find comparable homes to what we were building were basically non existent for this house on this land in this area. This was a headache in itself for months. At this point we either build another home (not our dream home) or forget the whole thing. The only other way was to figure out the difference between the build amount and the appraisal amount. At some point the appraisal amount would match the home but not until after it was built. So if we had had our crystal ball working, we would have asked the banks about this. You don’t know this until you try building a custom home on strange land in a certain city.
